Choosing a BESS Supplier in India: Ten Things Worth Checking

A battery energy storage system is bought on a specification sheet and lived with for ten years, and the parts that decide how those ten years go are rarely the parts on the front page. Capacity in kilowatt hours is easy to compare. Everything below is what separates two systems quoting the same kilowatt hours.

1. Power and energy are two different numbers

A system rated 100 kW / 215 kWh can deliver 100 kilowatts, and it can do so for roughly two hours. Ask which one your application actually needs. Peak shaving is a power problem — you need the kilowatts for short bursts. Running a plant through an outage is an energy problem. Buying the wrong ratio is the most common and most expensive mistake in this market.

2. C-rate: how fast can it be charged and discharged?

A pack rated 0.5C discharges its energy over two hours; 1C over one. If your load needs energy faster than the system is rated to give it, the shortfall comes out of cycle life. Get the rated charge and discharge C-rate, and the peak, and check both against the duty you have in mind rather than the duty in the brochure.

3. Cycle life, with its depth of discharge

The same warning as for any lithium product: a cycle figure without test conditions is not a specification. Look for the shape 6,000 cycles at 95% DOD, 25°C, 0.5C/0.5C. Then ask what the system is expected to retain at end of rated life, because a battery at 70% of its original capacity is still working and may no longer meet your requirement.

4. Cooling decides how it behaves in an Indian summer

Air-cooled systems are simpler and cheaper; liquid-cooled systems hold cell temperature more evenly, which matters for pack life where ambient temperatures run high and the system cycles hard. Neither is automatically right. What you want to know is the operating temperature range, what happens above it — derating, or shutdown — and whether the quoted cycle life assumes a temperature your site will actually hold.

5. Round-trip efficiency, measured where?

Every kilowatt hour you put in comes back smaller. Round-trip efficiency above 90% is normal for a modern system, but the figure is sometimes quoted at the battery and sometimes at the AC terminals after the power conversion system, and those are not the same number. Ask which one you are being shown.

6. Fire safety, and what has been tested

For an installation inside or beside a building, this is the section to read twice. UL 9540A is the thermal runaway fire test that large-scale storage is assessed against; IEC 62619 and UL 1973 cover cell and stationary battery safety. Ask what suppression is built in — aerosol based systems are common in containerised and cabinet products — and what the enclosure is rated to, IP54 and above for anything outdoors.

7. Who owns the EMS, and what can you see?

The energy management system decides when the battery charges, when it discharges and how it behaves with solar, the grid and a generator. Ask what modes it supports, whether you can change them yourself, what data you can export, and whether remote monitoring is included or a subscription. A system you cannot see into is a system you cannot prove is earning.

8. How does it grow?

Requirements change. Ask whether capacity can be added later, whether new modules can be mixed with modules several years old, and what that does to the warranty. Modular and stackable architectures are designed for it; a monolithic system may not be.

9. Commissioning, service and spares

Who commissions it, who services it, where the nearest engineer is, and what the response time is. Then: how long are spares available, and for how long can a module be replaced with the same module. A ten-year asset supported by a supply chain nobody can promise beyond two years is a risk worth pricing.

10. Evidence, not adjectives

Ask for installations you can verify: the customer, the configuration, the year, and ideally a site you can visit. Deployments are the one claim a supplier cannot manufacture cheaply. What is the difference between kW and kWh in a BESS?

Kilowatts are how much power the system can deliver at once; kilowatt hours are how much energy it holds. A 100 kW / 215 kWh system delivers 100 kilowatts for roughly two hours. Peak shaving needs power, riding through an outage needs energy, and a system sized for one will disappoint at the other.

Is liquid cooling better than air cooling for a BESS in India?

It holds cell temperature more evenly, which helps pack life where ambient temperatures are high and the system cycles hard, and it is usual on larger containerised systems. Air-cooled systems are simpler and cost less, and are appropriate where the duty is lighter. The question to ask is what temperature the quoted cycle life assumes, and whether your site will hold it.

Which certifications should a BESS carry in India?

Look for IEC 62619 and UL 1973 for cell and stationary battery safety, UN 38.3 for transport, and UL 9540A where thermal runaway testing is required — which is most installations in or beside a building. Ask for the reports covering the product you are buying, not a company-level statement.

Can a BESS be expanded after installation?

Modular and stackable systems are designed for it; monolithic ones often are not. Ask three things before you buy: whether modules can be added later, whether new modules can run alongside ones several years old, and what either does to the warranty on the original equipment.
