Telecom sites run on unreliable grid power and sit in unconditioned shelters, which is the hardest duty a lead-acid string can be given. Replacement cycles were short and each failure meant sending a crew to a site nobody visits often.

22,864 packs are in service across the network, each reporting its own state of charge, temperature and health back to a dashboard.
The change that matters is not the battery, it is what maintenance became. A site is now visited because its data says it needs attention, rather than on a schedule or after it has already gone down. On a network this size that is the difference between a fleet of crews responding to failures and a much smaller one preventing them. The five-year warranty and the five-year AMC that follows it put a fixed number against ten years of that, which is the part a network operator can actually plan around.

A VRLA string in an unconditioned tower shelter is often replaced within a year or two, because lead-acid loses roughly half its design life for every 10°C above 25°C and takes further damage from every deep discharge. An LFP pack is rated for thousands of full cycles and tolerates the heat and the partial-state-of-charge cycling that shorten a lead-acid life, which is why CLN warrants these for five years and supports them under AMC for five more.
48V is the standard for telecom DC power, and this deployment uses 100Ah packs at that voltage, with 400Ah and 800Ah module capacities where a site carries more load or needs longer autonomy. Sizing comes from the site load in watts and the backup hours required, not from the tower type.
Yes, and that is what this project is. The packs are rack-mountable and run at the same 48V DC the existing equipment expects, so the replacement is a swap rather than a redesign. The addition is the BMS and central BMS, which give the site remote visibility it did not have before.
Because the expensive part of a tower failure is the visit, not the battery. A site that reports its own state of charge and cell health lets an operator schedule a replacement into a planned round instead of dispatching a crew to a remote location at short notice.
