The challenge

A command control centre carries loads that cannot be interrupted, and a data centre UPS has to hold voltage through the gap between a grid failure and a generator reaching load.

Our solution

A comprehensive backup solution for critical data centre loads.

Scope of supply

  • Power system (UPS): 100 kW
  • Battery rating: 180 kWh backup
  • Installation duration: 2 hours

Application

Critical data centre infrastructure — uninterrupted operation during power outages

What changed

The command control centre carries 180 kWh of backup behind a 100 kW UPS, and the changeover was completed inside a two-hour window with the centre never off supply.

At that capacity the bank covers far more than the seconds a generator handover needs, so a generator that fails to start becomes an inconvenience rather than an outage. And because the BMS reports real capacity rather than float voltage, the bank's ability to do that is a known quantity between services rather than an assumption.

Questions we are asked about this

Conventionally only enough to bridge the gap to a generator — a few minutes. The practical answer is more, because the failure that actually causes an outage is a generator that does not start. This installation carries 180 kWh behind a 100 kW UPS, which covers considerably more than a handover.

Yes, and for standby duty they suit it better. Lithium carries high discharge current without the voltage collapse that ages a lead-acid string every time it is called on, and it tolerates sitting near full charge for long periods without the sulphation that quietly kills a standby VRLA bank.

Yes. This changeover was done in a two-hour installation window with the command control centre on supply throughout. It takes planning around the existing load path rather than a shutdown.

Substantially less than the equivalent VRLA. Lithium delivers the same usable energy at a fraction of the weight and volume, which is often what decides whether a battery room can hold the autonomy a site actually wants.
