The challenge

A passenger vehicle working underground in a coal mine cannot be recharged whenever it suits, cannot carry a battery that heats up in a confined space, and has to meet the safety rules that apply below ground.

Our solution

A 123 kWh liquid-cooled lithium iron phosphate battery built for electric passenger vehicles in underground coal mines, with active thermal management so the pack holds its temperature through a full shift.

Scope of supply

  • Battery capacity: 123 kWh
  • Nominal voltage: 537.6V
  • Capacity: 230Ah
  • Chemistry: lithium iron phosphate
  • Thermal management: liquid-based active system
  • Charging: 60 kW CCS2

Application

Electric passenger vehicles in underground coal mines

What changed

The vehicle runs a shift underground on one charge, and the liquid cooling keeps cell temperature even in a place where air cooling has little to work with. Charging at 60 kW on a CCS2 connector returns the pack to service between shifts rather than overnight.

Underground is the hardest place to put a battery. Ventilation is limited, ambient temperature is high, the duty is heavy and a pack cannot be taken out of service easily. Liquid cooling is what keeps cell temperature even under that duty, and a charger that returns the pack between shifts is what keeps the vehicle working.

Questions we are asked about this

A lithium iron phosphate pack built for the duty and the environment, with active thermal management and a charger sized to return it to service between shifts. Packs for underground vehicles are built to order, because the voltage and the shape follow the vehicle.

Air cooling has little to work with underground, where ventilation is limited and ambient temperature is high. A liquid system holds cell temperature more evenly across the pack, which matters for pack life when the vehicle is worked hard.

With a fast DC charger on a CCS2 connector, a pack returns to service between shifts rather than overnight. The time depends on the charger rating, the state of charge at the start and the charging profile the battery management system allows.
